What Is Chess?
Chess is a two-player board game played on an 8×8 square board with 64 squares. The squares alternate in color (usually black and white). Each player starts with 16 pieces, and the goal is to checkmate your opponent’s king, which means putting the king in a position where it cannot escape capture.
The Chess Pieces and Their Moves
There are six types of chess pieces, each with unique movements:
1. The King
- The most important piece in chess.
- Moves one square in any direction: up, down, left, right, or diagonally.
- The king must always stay safe. If it’s under attack, this is called “check.” If the king cannot escape, it’s a “checkmate,” and the game ends.

- Moves forward one square, but captures diagonally.
- On its first move, a pawn can move forward two squares.
- If a pawn reaches the other side of the board, it can be promoted to any piece (except a king).
